Making an Impact: Our Partnerships Push Our Mission Forward

Happy Tuesday!

Thanks to your continued support, we’re making incredible strides in our mission to support first-generation and marginalized students on their educational journeys. This fall has been filled with impactful partnerships, events, and new resources that are transforming lives.

Continued Partnership with HomeWorks Trenton

We are thrilled to continue our powerful partnership with HomeWorks Trenton, a supplemental residential after-school program for marginalized girls. In collaboration with KindWorks in Maryland, we facilitated the delivery of 14 refurbished iPads to ensure these students have the tools they need to succeed. Special thanks to Barrier Breakers® Board Member Richard Thornton for making this cross-state delivery possible!

Through this partnership, we’re providing comprehensive college counseling and ongoing support to these bright young women, ensuring they’re equipped for success in school and beyond.

Connecting Globally at the GlobalMindED Summit

On October 10, Barrier Breakers joined the GlobalMindED Summit in partnership with the Foundation for the Support of the United Nations in New York City. GlobalMindED is dedicated to closing equity gaps by creating opportunities for first-generation students to connect with leaders in education and industry.

Our student, Eastwood Yeboah, joined us at this event, where we had the privilege of meeting with university presidents and change leaders in education. We’re excited to continue this partnership and look forward to presenting at the 2025 GlobalMindED Conference in Denver, Colorado.

Engaging with Law Firm Partners

This fall, we've also deepened our connections with our law firm partners:

  • Neal Gerber Eisenberg (Chicago, IL): We presented at their event, "Diversity in the Legal Talent Pipeline: Volunteer Opportunities for Attorneys and Staff," showcasing mentorship and K-12 youth-focused organizations like Step Up, the All Stars Project, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
  • Haynes Boone (Dallas, TX):We collaborated on a live webinar in September, "Life in the Law," with their Black Lawyers Alliance, followed by a podcast recording to guide students as they navigate career options during law school.

Enhancing Student Support

We’re excited to share that we’ve launched an updated student and alumni platform! This platform strengthens connections within our community, enabling more in-person and virtual meetups, enhancing our Outreach and Wellness program, and supporting mentorship and check-ins with our students.

Join Us In Expanding Our Mission

There are several ways for you to get involved in our work at Barrier Breakers:

  • Volunteer Committees: If you’re interested in volunteering, we’d love to discuss opportunities with you.
  • Advisory Board Recruitment: We’re currently recruiting additional Advisory Board members for 2025. Let us know if you’d like to explore this opportunity.
  • Philanthropic Giving: As we head into the giving season, we’re grateful for donations of any size. This year, we're raising $75,000 to strengthen and support our Outreach and Wellness Program, create an Emergency Fund for our students, and expand our pro bono support to low-income students. Your generosity fuels this work and ensures we can continue breaking barriers for first-generation and marginalized students.

Dear Reader, At Barrier Breakers, we’re dedicated to empowering first-generation students. For us, a first-generation student includes any student whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year college degree traditionally in the United States. This group includes students whose parents went to college in another country, completed their degree online, and/or completed their degree later in life as a returning adult student. Your support can be life-changing for these resilient and...
